Intro to Relationship Abuse & a Wild Week

Students were introduced to the Dating Abuse lesson by first learning of the term Gaslighting. This is a form of psychological abuse and manipulation that seeks to plant seeds of doubt in a targeted individual, making them question their own memory, validity, perception, and sanity.

We talked about examples the you can hear such as:
You're being crazy
Are you on your period or something
That never happened
You're being too emotional
Why are you trying to create a problem
It was just a joke, it's not that serious

Videos we used to help ensure comprehension:

3rd block group piiiiiic!

Tutoring day vibes- the infamous mentee/mentor duo

After the events that happened in the Denver area last week we used this scale for each class when they entered the room so that we could gauge where they were at with their emotions regarding the levels of high stress, fear, and anxiety that may have been hindering them feeling comfortable at school and ready to learn. Shout out to Sara for the idea! We talked openly in circle talk about mental health, gun violence, and suicide. Also the importance of reaching out for help if you need it and checking in on your friends.

To help us all cope with the stress the event brought on and the stress that they are feeling as we approach the end of the year, we all made stress balls and each mentor leader lead a lesson on coping with stress and anxiety. They each chose a different video to show each of their classes that they felt they would relate to. For example, Cece chose this video:

And pictured at the top of this blog post are some 4th block girls and their stress balls made of balloons and flour. Many of them popped theirs over the weekend so that lasted long............

This event stifled the continuation of our Dating Abuse lesson but that will continue this week.

19 days until graduation
4 Fridays left for Seniors

You're welcome
